How to Play

Objective

AAT's Dueling Ratios helps you practice fraction (and, optionally, integer) arithmetic — addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division — by working through each problem step by step, the same way you would on paper.

Game Modes

  • Solo — practice on your own, at your own pace.
  • Same Device — two players take turns on one screen.
  • vs Computer — take turns against a computer opponent on one screen. Choose Easy, Medium, or Hard — higher difficulties answer faster and make fewer mistakes.
  • Online — challenge someone on a different device using a shareable room code.

How to Solve a Problem

Each problem is broken into a series of steps, shown as empty boxes. One box glows at a time — that's the one asking for an answer. Tap the matching number from the pool to fill it in. A correct answer earns a point and moves you to the next step; a wrong answer costs a point, but the same box stays open to try again.

The steps look a little different depending on the operation:

  • Similar fractions (same denominator) — add or subtract the numerators directly.
  • Dissimilar fractions (different denominators) — first find the Lowest Common Denominator (LCD), convert each fraction, then combine them.
  • Multiplication — multiply straight across: numerators together, denominators together.
  • Division — flip the second fraction, then multiply.

If the result can be simplified, you'll get one more step to reduce it — and if it simplifies all the way to a whole number, you'll enter just that one number instead of a fraction.

Scoring

Every correct answer is worth +1 point; every wrong guess costs -1 point. Whichever player has the higher score once all the fraction pairs are solved wins the game.

Streaks

Answer correctly several times in a row within a single game to build a streak. Every 5 in a row (5, 10, 15, 20, and onward) pops up a celebration banner with its own sound — the color and chime escalate through four tiers as your streak climbs, then loop back around for even longer runs. A single wrong answer resets the streak back to zero.

Setup Options

  • Operations — choose which operations to practice, or select all of them.
  • Allow negatives — turns on negative numbers, adding integer sign rules to the practice.
  • Number of fractions — how many problems to solve in one game (1–5).
  • Time control — an optional shared clock. Each player's time only counts down on their own turn, and running out of time ends the game immediately.

Tiebreakers

If both players finish with the same score, whoever has more time remaining wins the tiebreaker — but only if a timer was turned on. Without a timer, a tied score stays a tie.

Playing Online

One player creates a game and receives a short room code; the other player enters that code to join. Once both players are in, the game begins automatically for both of you at the same time.

Signing In with Google (optional)

Typing a name is always enough to play — signing in with Google is entirely optional, and only unlocks a few extra things: your stats following your account across every device instead of just one browser, the ability to join or create a class, and cosmetic Tile Effects you can unlock and equip. Look for the "Sign in with Google" option next to the name field on the setup screen.

My Stats

Available once you're signed in with Google. Shows how many games you've played and your accuracy, broken out separately for Solo, Same Device, vs Computer, and Online, plus a combined "All Modes" total. Its "My Badges" section shows every achievement badge you've earned so far (tap a badge, or hover it on a computer, to see its name and description) plus an "Up Next" progress bar toward whichever badge you're closest to earning in each badge family. Right below that, "Tile Effects" is where you equip whichever correct-answer animation you'd like to use — see below.

Achievement Badges

Signed-in players can permanently unlock badges by hitting certain milestones. Earning one pops up its own gold celebration banner the moment it happens, in addition to showing up in My Stats afterward. Current badges:

Tile Effects

Found in My Stats, right below your badges. This is a cosmetic customization for the little animation and sound played whenever you get an answer right — it never affects gameplay or scoring, it's purely for fun. Tap an icon to preview what it does and equip it; the one you have equipped gets a highlighted ring. Locked ones show a small 🔒 and are still tappable to see which badge unlocks them:

  • 🏹 Classic Arc — the default, always available.
  • 🏀 Bounce Drop — unlocked by 🌱 Getting Started.
  • 🌀 Spin Toss — unlocked by 🔥 On a Roll.
  • ⚡ Warp Zoom — unlocked by 💯 Sharpshooter.
  • 🎉 Confetti Burst — unlocked by ⚡ Unstoppable.
  • ✨ Sparkle Trail — unlocked by 🧠 Fraction Champion, the rarest badge to earn through steady lifetime accuracy.
  • 👥 Kage Bunshin — unlocked by 🐇 Quick Thinker and ✖️ Multiplication Master together. Two decoy clones — visually identical to the real tile, so you genuinely can't tell which is real until they vanish — fly out alongside it, then poof into smoke right as it lands. Comes with its own correct-answer sound, its own game-start sound, and an earthy tan-and-green ambient board glow.
  • 🗡️ Bankai — unlocked by 🚀 Speed Master, one of the toughest single-game challenges in the app. The showiest effect in the game: a fast blade-slash toss trailing black flames, a dark red ambient board glow, its own correct-answer sound — and equipping it also swaps the game-start sound for a unique cue, plus a full-screen announcement card, the moment a game begins.
  • 🌞 Gear 5 — unlocked by 🌟 Flawless Forty and 🧠 Fraction Champion together, one of two two-badge unlocks in the roster. A bouncy, rubbery white-and-gold toss with a star-burst landing, its own correct-answer sound, a wobbling gold ambient board glow, and its own game-start sound and announcement card.
  • ⚪ Ultra Instinct — unlocked by 🎓 Math Whiz and 🧮 Math Machine together, the other two-badge unlock — paired with the two hardest accuracy/volume badges rather than a streak or speed badge, on purpose. The calmest effect in the roster: a near-instant silver afterimage trail with no landing flourish at all. The board itself stays quietly alive the whole game — slow-rising silvery particles, a soft breathing aura around the whole board, and an occasional rare streak that flashes across it.

Whichever effect you have equipped also gives the board itself a matching ambient look for the rest of the game, not just the toss animation. In Same Device mode, only the account signed in on this device gets the custom effect on their turn — a same-device partner, or the computer in vs Computer mode, always sees the plain Classic Arc. A custom game-start sound (and, for Bankai and Gear 5, a full-screen announcement card too) works the same way — it's tied to whichever account is signed in on this device, not to turns, since it plays before anyone has had a turn yet.

My Classes

Its own chip on the opening screen, once signed in with Google. A teacher (signed in with a school account) can create up to 5 classes, each with its own short join code to share — students who join with that code show up in a roster showing each student's games played and accuracy. A teacher can rename a class (pencil icon), remove an individual student from the roster (person icon, tap again to confirm), or delete a class entirely once it's no longer needed (trash icon), freeing up a slot for a new one. A student can only be in one class at a time; joining a new one replaces the last. If a student's class is ever deleted, or the teacher removes them from it, that's picked up automatically the next time they open My Classes.

Watch Games

Lets a teacher (signed in with a school account) browse and spectate ongoing Online games in real time, without taking part.

Worksheets

Generates a printable practice sheet — the same kinds of problems as the game, laid out with blank boxes to fill in by hand, plus an answer key on the last page. Choose the operations, negatives, and how many problems (1–10), then print or save as a PDF straight from your browser's print dialog. No sign-in needed.

Send Feedback

Once signed in with Google, look for the 💬 button in the bottom-right corner of the setup screen. Use it to send a comment, bug report, or suggestion straight to the developer — it only appears on the setup screen itself, not mid-game.
